What happened to logging in to my Tesla?

Question

Ok, I get that giving a web site the password to your car is not a great idea.  But could someone explain to me how I am supposed to link my ABRP account to my car now?  I've been digging around the Internet, including teslamotorsclub.com for 15 minutes and not found anything useful.  There seem to be many ways to generate a "token", which I assume is something effectively like a password, but probably unique to the web site or whatever.  The point is I've not found a way to generate a token that doesn't involve very complex scripts from unknown sources.

In other words, WTF?  How is this intended to work?  Is my ABRP use forever cut off from my actual car now?

Hi @gnuarm,

For clarity, we never store your Tesla password (but I of course see the reason to be concerned about safety). We do however use the moment you log into Tesla to generate a token an access key for the connection, which we'll store encrypted.

But you are also free to provide us a token generated by a different service if you prefer but we do not make any official recommendations of such.

Sorry, I'm not following you.  I am logged into the web page, my car shows up and Automatic Settings is selected, but the values are not from the car.  Previously, the web page would read values from the car.  I can't find a place to enter the account info to access the car, even though this was always remembered before.

In other words, I have no idea how to use this feature anymore.  Has it been deleted from the website?

To be honest, I don't really like using ABRP much of the time, because it seems there's always something that has changed, something very unobvious.  I spend as much time trying to make the durn thing work as I do actually using it.

Ok, I figured it out.  You have to log into the car through the app.  This is not supported in the browser.  Once logged in through the app, it shares the token with the browser.

It would be nice if you simply explain that clearly, rather than the less than clear message about "the moment you log into Tesla", tokens and the app.  I still don't understand what you mean by that comment.

Correct, due to changes made on Tesla's side we're no longer able to support this in the web version.

There is a token access key generated as a result of the linking process, in which you log into Tesla (Tesla's website, viewed in the ABRP app). We never see or store your password to your Tesla account.

It might be helpful if someone were to explain that in the webpage, don't you think???

I think ABRP has a lot of issues with inadequate documentation.  Actually, that's not really correct.  The actual webpage has no documentation that can be accessed from the webpage.  It's all "learn from your mistakes".  That's not a great way to write software.

I'll be honest.  ABRP is the best webpage for planning trips in my Tesla, but only because I don't know of a similar product.

Hi Katya,

I do not know, who this is supposed to work.

I shall use the ABRP app and log in to the Tesla website with this app? How? Where?

Here's how;

1. Go into: Settings (Advanced) > Car model
2. Click the option ‘Add my car’
3. Specify the vehicle model
4. Select the linking option ‘Link MyTesla’ in the list
5. Follow the setup instructions

Here's the start of our official documentation:
https://www.iternio.com/abrp-manual

We'll be adding more to this page as ABRP evolves.

How does a user of the webpage or the app find this documentation?

Actually, when in the phone app, needing to access documentation is a huge PITA.  What is needed is information in the app or the webpage.  Rather than construct a difficult to use documentation package, the tool should be obvious enough to use without a manual.

That's correct and we're currently working on implementing the linking where suitable.

Good luck, I have not figure out how to make this work yet. Terrible design. A number of people suggested ABRP, so far I am not seeing it.

It is useful for planning real trips involving more than one stop.  The car will supposedly do this, but it doesn't do as much or offer real flexibility.  I use ABRP to actually "plan" trips requiring at least one charge, especially in the winter when the charging is more frequent.

But ABRP can be a stubborn pig at times, giving little indication of how to use it or what is wrong when it isn't doing what you expect.  Stick with it and keep trying.  In the end, it is the only tool for planning trips.  I haven't found any others.

But then it has a habit of letting you down.  I need to leave the house this morning for an all day trip.  ABRP is refusing to send the trip to the car.  I don't have time to mess with this.   The error message is just, "Error".  Yes, big help.

Here's another problem.  I tried to use the web page again, but once again it had lost the connection to the Tesla car.  I had to get the phone and very painfully get through the process that is fraught with issues.  I don't know if the software is just plain buggy, or if it is messed up because there might be connectivity issues.  After all, it's a bleeding cell phone!  After some five to ten minutes of dicking around with the phone, it was logged in again and now the web page works.

So is this going to be a part of the routine?  Every few weeks you have to use your phone to log into your Tesla account through ABRP just to have access to the car?

We absolutely wish we could've continued to support linking via the web version but due to some technical aspects of the linking process with Tesla, this is no longer possible and we can only advise you to use the iOS or Android app.

You should however not be disconnected on the regular, only one login should be required. But, Tesla may make changes on their side at any time and then it could of course happen that you are disconnected and have to log in again.

I've replied to your previous report: https://abrp.upvoty.com/b/report-a-bug/send-trip-to-car-gives-error

For any other issues, or design flaws please feel free to submit a new report or add to the existing one.
