insists avoiding highway 1 from Vancouver to Calgary between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke, BC

Recommended Posts

Description: Planing trip Highway 1 to highway 5, then highway 1 to Calgary planner forces alternate route between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke, BC
Type: Webpage
Replication Steps:
  1. Replication
  2. Steps
  3. If applicable

Never had this issue surface till now, appears the router planner does not know highway 1 does extend between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke it insists on going through Enderby on a back road.

I have done a little more research, after having read a blog form abetterrouterplaner blog, saying that they use open street maps, again why would my route be so badly planned 649612554_SalmonArmtoRevelstokeBCviaTranscandaHwy1openstreetmaporg.thumb.jpg.9036afa838eaf2b4e7a8dd603983df17.jpg snowmobile trail does not show, see the following screen shot form openstreetmaps, showing clearly Highway 1, any idea?

Hi @Bert Hogendoorn,

It appears that the snowmobile track was marked as a 'minor road' in OSM while it would've been more correct to mark it as an 'unmaintained track road'. Additionally, and I've seen this before, parts of the Trans-Canada Highway had it's direction a little messed up.

What you see in OSM at this level of zoom does not include information about any part of the highways direction. Nor would a road marked as 'minor road' be visible.

Users can make edits in OSM and if you click the blue line of the route you'll be able to get a link to that exact part of the route in OSM.
I've made changes for both the snowmobile track and the highways directions according to satellite images which I hope are correct. It will however take some time before those changes appear in ABRP as map processing does take quite some time. We update maps once a week.

Hi @Bert Hogendoorn,

Could you create and link a plan for the specific distance which is avoided here? (You can place custom points on the map right before and after the detour and remove all other waypoints)

Same route but Vancouver detours  side streets off Trans-Canada Highway, this is getting silly and useless route planing.493669850_VancouvertoCalgaryoppstodosidestreetsoffTransCanada.thumb.jpg.0f7f681f59c5e7a767011fd81733ce3b.jpg

Could you do this for this example as well?

Ok the major error has been fixed (Snowmobile trail) but I notice there still remains a detour off highway 1 through a forestry service road, no sign of this in OSM, see the attachement.

Here are the 2 GPS coordinates 50.96958, -118.73106 & 50.99221, -118.70076 where the route planner diverts to the Forestry road.

Hi @Bert Hogendoorn,

Thank you. The planner does not currently seem to take the detour into the forest, did a check including the coordinates given and some points before and after them: https://abetterrouteplanner.com/?plan_uuid=3a05e9cf-4fa9-4a6b-84aa-2bdf216c03a5

Does it look alright on your side as well?

Do you have information about the detour in Vancouver also?
