Getting frustrated now

Recommended Posts

I’m a big supporter of ABRP. Barely a day goes by without me recommending it to someone. I pay for Premium features, despite barely using my car during Covid - because I want to support ABRP and help it to develop.

Recently, I’ve been getting more and more frustrated though. I’m sorry to say, the app just isn’t good enough as it is. It’s easily amongst the most buggy and frustrating apps on my phone (I have lots of apps).

The problems were easily forgivable when ABRP was only web based and was more of a small hobby/project, and also when it became an app but was still completely free with no premium option.

But now that it is less of a small hobby/project, and more of a business with paying customers, the various bugs, inconsistencies and less than brilliant overall UI/UX is becoming less easy to accept.

I would like to see a real focus on just ironing out any and all bugs and inconsistencies, and then really refining the UI/UX.

Recent issues I’ve experienced include (these are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head):

- repeatedly being logged out of the app

- being logged in but saved cars not appearing

- not being able to override a live SoC

- not being able to enter times properly

- various formatting / display errors with numerous elements half hidden/not aligned etc

- problems when rearranging way points

- problems when viewing network preferences

- not being able to zoom out to see the entire route

Hi @Bill N,

Sorry to hear you're having these issues! We're endlessly thankful for the support from our users, both recommendations as well as subscriptions and we of course want to make these things right. It is true that it is no longer a one man project, but compared to the size of our current amount of users, we're still a very small team, please bear with us.

Could you tell me which type of device and OS version you're using?

We did have issues with sessions just the other day but these problems were fixed as soon as we learned about them and you should no longer be logged out.

I'm not really sure what could cause this, perhaps it was related to the issue with sessions so I'd like to ask if it still happens for you?

By manually typing in a value for SoC in settings there should not be any issues with overriding the live value. If this does not work for you, you tell us more specifically what happens? Does the text field not accept the custom value or does the planner completely disregard the new input and still plan using the live value?

Could you tell us in which situations/places this is troublesome and how?

We are aware that the design isn't super pretty in some places currently. We do make rather rapid changes and unfortunately design sometimes suffers the consequences. If there are any specific cases where it the app difficult to use we'd be very thankful if you could point these out / provide screenshots. It is worth mentioning that such issues are likely to be device specific, hence a bit more difficult for us to detect.

Are you having troubles hitting the right place on the screen in order to move the waypoint in the list or how would you describe what happens?

Does this occur in planning mode or driving mode?

Thanks Katya. I just really want ABRP to be even more brilliant than it already is!

I’m using iPhone 12 with latest iOS14.3 and latest ABRP version too.

I’m just going to refer to the issues by number, for ease, so:

1. Ok, thanks- will keep an eye out and see if it returns.

 2. Yes, happened a few hours ago. I try logging out and in etc, but only way I’ve found to immediately fix it is to delete and reinstall the app.

3. The settings update correctly but the planner just ignores the entered figure and continues to use the ‘live’ figure (which was incorrect because Tronity hadn’t updated - probably due to the car having poor data connection).

4. Problem is in waypoint settings when entering times. It keeps only accepting 12h times, despite 24h times being used everywhere else in the app. I think it can be fixed by changing the language to something different and then back to English UK, but it seems to come back, or perhaps if a different car is selected. It should just default to 24h I think. Or there should be a separate 12/24h clock setting.

5. Some weirdness / text overlap in the waypoint setting screens. Can’t read the full text on all buttons. Also with long break button and the other buttons down there.

6. Dragging waypoints to rearrange them just goes weird sometimes and instead of moving a waypoint just creates duplicates and messes it all up.

7. List of networks where pretences have been entered just doesn’t show up properly sometime - i.e the list is blank. Or it’s there but you have to scroll up to find it. “Type network name” also doesn’t show fully.

8. In driving mode. There doesn’t seem to be a way of zooming out the map and having it stay zoomed out - it immediately snaps back to being zoomed in. Pretty sure I tried all the maps views.

Generally, I think the complex nature of the app means it would benefit from a ‘first run tutorial’. When I recommend ABRP to people I find myself having to explain stuff to them that ought to intuitive or failing that should be explained in the app and shouldn’t require the user to just accidentally discover it. Eg tapping on the planner result to show the predicted average consumption and charge costs.

Have to agree with BIll. This is super useful app but the thing is so deep. So for a noob, a setup steps would really hel

1. Figuring out how to login a tesla is buried. You have to know to go to car/new car. It shoould really just walk you thru setup

2. I don’t know how many Tesla’s there are but why is connect not a default. You have to keep clicking on the icon that looks like a battery. We drove for three days not realizing that this is what you need to connect. If you have a logged in car then why isn’t it always connected.

3. Bugs. Ok here is out list

- routing engine. Is there logging somewhere. We just finished a 1200 km drive and it kept saying. Alternative no longer viable. See option 1/0. And the warning stuff there the while day. Obviously there were no options amd it was viable.
- a tesla only thing. There is no way to filter out the 72kW and 150kW chargers. At least on the US, in California, the tesla chargers are so full. Knowing the 250kW ones is really important.

- having to create separate routes for planning and for driving. Ok a usability one. If you are doing planning then you want to override the starting soc but ok the road this doesn’t work. You get the wrong soc so unless I’m missing it you need a my position to route and then a hard soc coded planning route

I too have not driven too much with Covid, and having just managed to get an OBD device that works with EVNotify, I've come back to see how well I can use ABRP.

1) My biggest issue is that there seem to be different things available in different modes, yet it is not always obvious what mode you are in or how to get there.  For example, last night I was looking to ensure that I had a connection to EVNotify (on the app and the web).  I could find nothing at all.  Today I was fooling around with routes and suddenly I saw the EVNotify info.  Perhaps this only shows when you have an active route?

2) I stored several routines on the web, but I can't find any way to recall them on the app!

3) Other notes here say there is a round trip option, but I can't find it.

4) This one is resolved but it is a good example of the general problem:  The place where you tell the app which chargers format you can use (CCS, Tesla, CHAdeMO) is hidden under something in settings that says "batteries".   And btw, I have a Chevy Bolt and (not surprisingly) CHAdeMO does not appear as a choice.  However, Tesla does appear.  In fact, it is the default.  When you set you vehicle type, the charger type should have a reasonable default.  (BTW, the problem I resolved was that I marked Tesla chargers as a network not to use, but since Tesla chargers were the charger type default, I could never get a valid route).

I use Chrome for web access, and an iPhone for the in-car app.

Thanks for all your work!

I'm stuck in the middle of a ABRP plan, both in the web version and in the app.

I cannot get out and back to the ABRP top level.  I'm referring to the page where I can look at my old plans, start a new plan.

I'm another fan who maintains his premium membership, even when I cannot make trips.

Could you submit this as a bug report over at: https://abrp.upvoty.com/boards/posts/report-a-bug/ where our staff members handle issue reports? (The forum remains active for ABRP users, but we no longer handle bug reports here).
Please include screenshots, app version and other useful information
