Can Tesla (M3) Navigation utilize ABRP trip data?

Recommended Posts

I may have dreamed this, but I thought I saw somewhere that once one has a trip planned in ABRP, that routing and all of its data can be sent to the on board Tesla navigation, and override the basic Tesla navigation options.

I have an upcoming multi-stop/multi-SuperCharger trip coming up with some customized ABRP routings--nothing that either Google or Tesla would support.  Is there anyway to upload this routing to the car and use it instead of the limited Tesla routing?  If so, will the Navigate on Autopilot be able to read the ABRP routing the same as if it were the Tesla routing?

Has anyone done this?  How'd you do it?  Thanks...

I believe it should be possible, if a little ungainly due to how Tesla's implemented their system.  I don't personally have a Tesla, so I've not tried this myself (please let me know if it works!):

  1. Plan a route on your phone
  2. Click "Share > Share Next Step"
  3. Send that location to the Tesla App (you may have to unselect the default app to allow this).  Tesla App will send it to the car's Navigation

If you're happy to use the in-car navigation at this point, you're set! Note that Tesla won't know your target arrival charge from ABRP, so it will only suggest alternates if it thinks you're not going to make it at all.  If you want to have ABRP follow the plan in driving mode, you need a couple more steps:

  1. Open ABRP in the in-car browser
  2. Add your MyTesla login (if not done already) under More Settings
  3. Open the plan from Saved Plans (or replan if it's the most recent plan performed from your phone)

Now we'll show you our own estimate of your driving performance, account for things like headwinds and unexpected temperatures and the like as you drive.  The alternative to these steps is to have ABRP run on your phone on a mount near the main screen, but the setup steps are basically the same.  I do it this way with Android Auto in my car (Bolt EV)

Hello Jason

Maybe a language barrier problem, but..

Do you mean that ABRP now setups headwinds and temperature on its own for the planning?

Not quite yet (we're still working out a good way to pull predicted weather conditions for your route), but we'll detect the additional (or reduced) consumption as you drive and calibrate to whatever conditions you're currently in.

"Share Next Step" does nothing.  I click on it and it just sits there, no response, no message... Nothing. What's supposed to happen?

It says, "Share to App..."  What app?  The Tesla app, is there a ABRP app?

Share to App > Share Next Step opens a geo: link like:

geo:30.0670767781663,-95.2471208571473?q=30.0670767781663,-95.2471208571473(EVGo%20Cracker%20Barrel%20%5BEVgo%5D)

On Android and iOS, any app can register to open that kind of link Google Maps, Waze, etc all can.  My understanding is that the Tesla App can as well, which is how you can send it locations.

This is all very exciting and new to me. Looking forward to my first real road trip from Seattle to Yellowstone next year.  I've already use the app to plan the trip and the information is amazing simple and informative.  Is this an app that you can download to your phone? Just looking at it on my laptop atm. Happy to donate at some point.

That's something we're exploring right now, trying to figure out the best way to build an app that we can maintain long term.

For the moment, you can click the "Add to Home Screen" button in Chrome and it'll make a web-app on your phone that works pretty well (that's how I use ABRP in my car, in tandem with Google Maps in Android Auto).
