A Better Route Planner got Worse

Recommended Posts

Where are you from?Las Vegas, NV USA

What car do you drive? 2013 Tesla Model S P85+, 2019 Model 3 Long Range and ordered 2010 Long Range Plus Model S

What's the longest trip you've taken in your EV? Houston to Key West, FL

I have been using "A Better Route Planner" for years. I just tried to plan a new multi-day road trip and tried using the latest version of the software. I opted for the Premium Version with the intent of paying $50/yr for the subscription. This would be an acceptable price for an enhanced version, but the new version is a poor excuse for a major revision.

The new version is not intuitive and harder to use. It also isn't that useful. I set a state of charge of 90% leaving my Las Vegas residence. It required me to Supercharge at a Las Vegas Supercharger. It also couldn't find a valid route to Burlington, VT. It proposed that I drive 41 mph from Las Vegas to Green River, UT. It skipped Superchargers in St. George, Ut, Beaver, UT and Richfield, UT.

I was happy that the software allowed adding dates and times for waypoints, but this feature is messed up. I added an overnight stop in Grand Junction, CO. I stipulated a 7:00 AM departure on July 9. The software then scheduled a Supercharger event with a departure of 8:00 AM from the Grand Junction Supercharger. Ridiculous!! I then added an overnight stop at Gothenburg, NE. I tried many times clicking July 10 on the calendar to depart on July 10. The software kept changing the date to August 10.

If you wish to delete a waypoint you can't right click on the waypoint on the map to delete it. Instead it adds a marker that is impossible to delete. It is unacceptable to not have the functionality of "right clicking" on the map.

For multi day trips it seems I need to go back and use "My Scenic Drives"

Sorry to hear that! We're always working to improve the app, and we're very happy to have feedback, so hopefully we can make it better.

This sounds like a bug in the routefinding, could you email the route links to us at bugs@abetterrouteplanner.com so we can investigate?

Ah, looks like we've got a few more bugs in the departure time display, we'll get those fixed!

This is a good feature, I've added it to our to-do list.  We're a small dev team right now, but we're working hard to make the tool better!

Example of this confusing navigation: you load a saved plan, it will show the calculated route. Now pressing the "back" button will go back to the saved plans. Pressing "back" again goes to the editing of the plan. Now pressing the "calculate" (play?) button shows the calculated plan. But pressing "back" now will go back to the editing. This makes sense from logic site. However, it is not intiutive and not the expected usage (pressing back twice to go to editing).

Same happens when settings are opened and then "play" is pressed. Again, "back" will go to the settings. But the route editing would make more sense - to me.

Fun fact: after choosing a saved plan during calculation the editing is shown. If you abort that, you are in the editing and pressing "play" now will show the route and "back" in there goes to the editing. So if you are fast enough to abort route calculation... everything is different.
