Hi,

I love the app and would like to have it include my electric motorcycle as well. I've provided the data below, if needed I can also provide charging data for the 3,8kW charge tank setup and/or the 7,6kW three-phase setup. I have all the data in a database which can be provided at will. I can also provide the bike logs to show discharge and charge currents, although they are very coarse since they are logged in 5 minute intervals. I'm also prepared to do another test run to get the driving efficiency at different speeds, although that's a bit difficult since the roads that allow for instance 80km/h or 50km/h are too short to empty a battery on.

 

Driving Model:

Option 3 - Direct Car Connection - Provide method of receiving telemetry directly from the car via OBD, API, or other means.

Since the OBD is inaccessible, and the logs are created with 5 second intervals, the data has been recorded on video in real-world driving conditions going back and forth on the same stretch at a steady pace.

Start SOC: 99%, end SOC: 00%, distance travelled: 88km, time: 42 minutes, avg speed: 125km/h highway

Start SOC: 99%, end SOC: 00%, distance travelled: 115km, time: 70 minutes, avg speed: 98,5km/h highway

Nominal battery capacity: 11.6kWh

 

Charging Model:

Charge Curve - Provide a link to a chart or video detailing the charge power over time or by State of Charge %

 

Chargers:

1.3kW onboard Schuko single phase

2,3kW onboard + charge tank Schuko single phase, charge graph attached from 30-100% over night

Thanks for the quick response! Very excited to hear you're willing to give it a go, this will definitely take the edge of planning long(ish) distance travel!

Zero itself publishes an app providing some data over Bluetooth, but I haven't gotten around to playing with it. On the Android playstore there are some that use this data to get real-time info from the bike but i'm no real programmer so haven't toyed around with it. Connecting an OBD+ dongle should be possible, but on my particular bike the OBD has no power and is in a position that makes easy access impossible. This github https://github.com/zero-motorcycle-community has some community efforts to open the data up, perhaps that is of use?

Anyway, yesterday I took a detour to empty the battery before getting home (For science!) so I could log a complete charge curve using the Level 2 with just the 2016 charge tank accessory:

This is just using the charge tank (2,5kW) in automatic tandem with the on-board (1,3kW) which was a standard factory accessory, start SOC 00%, end SOC 100%, and as you can seee it's a fairly flat curve starting at 3.5kw, climbing to 3,6kW, then dipping again to 3.4kW ending at 3.5KW (Perhaps cell balancing kicks in here?) The volume charged was 11,1kW from the AC point of view, not taking charging efficiency in account.

Since my next step-up in charge power is a homebrew charger (Two Telco power supplies in series, programmed with CAN bus to follow Zero battery specs) I don't know if that is of any value for the plotting of charge graphs? If so, I'll be happy to empty it and log a graph!

The one thing I could use help with is compiling a list of the variants I should add, and the differences.  Is this something you could put together?  Maybe something like:

DSR - 11.6 kWh - 88km @ 125kmh - 115km @ 88.5kmh - 7.6kW max charge rate

DSR w/ Power Tank - ??kWh - ??km @ highway - ??km @ city - ??kW max charge rate

And so on for all the models we should have.  I will make the assumption that the consumption is basically the same for all the models, just more or less battery capacity available.

I compiled a list of the data you requested, by taking 87,5% of maximal pack capacity and the options that can be used on the bike like power tanks and charge tanks. You are right to assume consumption is about the same across the model range, because since 2015 all bikes have similar platform setups (Same IPM motor, same-ish controller). The only factors that differ are weight (The 7.2kWh bikes are about 30kg lighter), ride height (DS(R) is 5 cm taller) and accessories like windscreens but that is a range of variables too large to take into account IMHO. The R versions use the same motor type, they are just specced higher and have a bigger controller.

The battery options are only the options at factory, same with the charge options except for the DigiNow 9.9kW unit which has sold in sufficient numbers (As far as I can tell) to be taken into account. Since I do not own any other than the 2016 DSR ZF13.3 bike, the numbers have been extrapolated.

SDS is the S/DS/SR/DSR platform, ZFxx is the battery capacity, + PT means Plus Power Tank, battery capacity is total nominal, range 125 = range @ 125km/h, range 98.5 = range @ 98.5km/h, charge rate is all the common charging options. The batteries cannot charge past 1C so for the ZF7.2 6kW is max factory chargerate.

The bike has a C13 connector for the 1.3kW option with a US plug or Schuko plug for domestic charging, and a J1772 for the others. In EU the bike comes with a Mennekes-to-J1772 charging cable.

If there's anything more I can be helpful with then don't hesitate, appreciate the effort!

Sorry it took so long, I've built the models you laid out, please give them a check-over.  I simplified the charging model to avoid having 3 versions of each model on top of the two we already have with the PowerTank.  I also have it listed as chargeable with J1772 / Type2 Mennekes, and gave the max capability for each.

The only thing I realized I didn't get from you is model years.  Searching online I didn't really find anything definitive, do you happen to know offhand what the first (last?) years each of those various models were offered?

Adding a small more on zero at :

 I'm using the SDS model on ABRP and it's doing a great job. My actual model is the 2020 SR/F premium but your numbers are a little conservative - which gives me the percentage or two leeway I like ?

Question is - whilst I can see Power Tanks have been added as model options to extend range, can we also look at adding Charge Tank options to reduce charge time? I'm having mine fitted in a couple of months and am happy to provide a charge curve then.

The charge rate needs adjustment. Not everyone is driving with a 3rd party charger in the backpack.

The standard plan should include the nominal 6 kW charging option, which the stock charge tank provides. This should apply to all SR/DSR models.

Only the SR/x models can charge with up to 12 kW when fully equipped.

Agreed. I'm driving a premium srf with charge tank fitted now, so pulling 12kW charge when a charger can deliver it. This massively changes charge times on routes with motorway stops (though lockdown means I've not had chance to properly test it out yet).
